Erich Kunzel, 1935-2009 …

September 1, 2009

Erich Kunzel, the conductor of the Cincinnati Pops since their inception in 1977, died today of cancer at the age of 74.

In a typical Kunzel over-the-topness, he had been diagnosed in April with not one type of cancer, but three types, pancreatic, liver, and colon, but still continued to make appearances with the Pops, including his last appearance a month ago on August 1.

Kunzel was extraordinarily prolific, recording dozens of albums with the Pops. Last year he took the Pops to Beijing for an appearance at the Olympics.

His death might not mean a lot to people who aren’t fans on classical music, and the Pops. But trust me on this one. He’s going to be missed.
