Book, Author, Currently Reading update

October 28, 2008

Tony Hillerman, author of the Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn novels, passed away over the weekend.  I didn’t realize he was 83!

One of my favorite authors, Jim Harrison, has a new book out, The English Major.  You can listen to Alan Cheuse’s review here on NPR.  It’s about 60-something former English teacher-turned-farmer who is dumped by his wife of 37 years, and takes off on cross-country jaunt, Don Quixote-like.

For the past few weeks I’ve been reading about kings, mistresses, queens, and lovers.  Two books by Eleanor Herman: Sex with Kings, and Sex with the Queen. These were vastly entertaining, full of the anecdotal history I enjoy.  Recommended.

Sticking with the same subject matter, I also read a biography of Madame de Pompadour: Mistress of France, by Christine Pevitt Algrant, and am currently reading Love and Louis XIV: The Women in the Life of the Sun King, by Antonia Fraser.

Somewhere, shining in the distance, is Robert Parker’s new Spenser, Rough Weather, mind candy — just waiting for me.
