MIA at Tempe, Arizona and the 2006 Nebula Awards…

March 9, 2006

As much as kayleigh and I want to head to Tempe at the end of April for the Nebula Awards, I don’t think it’s going to happen. Things are just too busy and difficult to disappear for a few days.

It makes me sad and it makes me angry. Not only is it in Arizona, but Harlan Ellison, whom I’ve admired for decades, will be the next Grand Master, and Connie Willis, who we met and adored at Context 17, is toastmaster (toastmistress?).

Then there is the fact that Jack McDevitt is nominated for the book I just read, Polaris. We met him and his wife in Chicago last year and liked them both immediately.

Still, we do have several other conventions to look forward to — Millenicon, Marcon, Context, and the barely unprogrammed “relaxicon,” MidwestCon. A melancholy note though: this may be the last Context.  We’ve heard it may be combining with Marcon next year.

Added note: the new issue of Locus confirmed that the Nebulas for 2007 are in New York, and 2008 in Austin. That may be an interesting one.
